Mrs. Nancy Karanja who is a former accountant has managed to utilize her 0.5acre land to build her a good income. The owner of Sanla farm admits that it is not easy and it has been a struggle but she has reached where she even caught the attention of the United Nations. She even
won an award for the best farm among the small scale farmers.

There is nothing so spectacular about a farm being in the outskirts of the city, but Sanla Farm is impressive. It is an agricultural showcase of the fortunes a small piece of land can yield. It has been recognized for its exemplary use of small land and modern farming techniques and for being in the forefront in ensuring food security.

The farm houses 20 dairy cows which produce more than 500 litres of milk daily, three 50 x 100 feet greenhouses where tomatoes, cabbages and green pepper sparkle, a fish pond, a homestead, bore-hole and a biogas unit. Nancy Karanja, the proprietor, says the farm rakes in an estimated Sh750,000 per month. “I have been rated farmer of the year for the last three years by Njiri District Agricultural Office for organising my land efficiently to accommodate so many activities,” she says.

She started farming in 2008 when her husband bought the land. He intended it to be just a homestead but she had another plan. She started out with one Frisian Dairy cow which gave her about 10 litres of milk but now she has twenty of the same.

With good organization, you can be anything and get anywhere you want to.
